The do's and don'ts of moving interstate
January 21, 2019

Regardless of what industry you work in or what type of job you do, moving interstate for work is a big deal. There’s so many exciting things to look forward to but also many things that need to be sorted before you leave and when you arrive. Here’s some tips of things you should and shouldn’t do when you’re planning your big move.

Do declutter

Before moving, try and take some time to sort out your belongings so you only take the things you really need with you. This will save you money when it comes to moving everything and time unpacking at the other end.

Don’t leave accommodation to chance

It can be difficult to know where you want to live in a new city or state, especially if you’ve never been there before, but it’s not something that’s best left to chance. Do some research about suburbs or towns near your workplace so you have some idea of where you think you might like to live before you arrive. This will also help you identify where your kids can go to school so you can get them settled as quick as possible.

It may even be a good idea to arrange a short term rental in an area you’re thinking of living in so you have somewhere to stay when you arrive and can try the area out before you settle more permanently.

By having somewhere to live, at least for the first few weeks, you can then focus on getting ready to start your new job and hit the ground running. You can look for rental accommodation on websites like  Domain  or short-term stays on  Airbnb.

Do seek out healthcare

If you’ve just moved interstate, it may take time to establish new networks. One of the most important networks to seek out early on is healthcare – you don’t want to have to search for doctor or dentist when you’re already sick. When you’re planning your move perhaps research what healthcare providers are nearby. Websites like  White Coat  can help you find healthcare professionals and see reviews about them. Once you’ve identified someone that sounds right for you and your family, you can get in touch and make sure that they have capacity to take on a new family so you’re set when you arrive.

Don’t forget to tell people

There’s so much to remember when you’re moving interstate, it can be easy to forget to tell people. It’s important to notify a range of services so that you don’t miss out on important communications or have any penalties imposed. Remember to update things like your drivers licence and tell your private health insurance provider, Centrelink, Medicare, your bank and your superannuation fund.

If you’re thinking of moving interstate for work,  partner with an agency  who can help you find the perfect job for you.
